Mentally Well

Two months ago, I said goodbye to my therapist of four years.

I’m so grateful for the work we did together, and it seemed a little strange once I decided our semi-weekly meetings were no longer necessary. The internet is full of people suggesting therapy to all, me included. But what about when you realize the goals you set out to accomplish have been achieved? What about when you find yourself only checking in with your therapist as you would a friend? When you decide that you don’t want others’ advice anymore because you trust your own judgement?

I decided it was time to move on. Though I’ll miss her, our work was done.

Bad things continue to happen, but I don’t catastrophize like I used to. I don’t feel helpless, lost. I handle things differently.

A month after my final session, I went to a gluten-free bakery and had a custom cake made to celebrate the accomplishment. I did the work! I don’t feel mentally ill anymore!

A month after that (yesterday) I painted this painting in celebration.

Therapy Grad, acrylic on canvas, 11 x 14

How would you know if you’re done with therapy? I’d like to explore this more in a different post. Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments!
