Today is Halloween, but two weeks ago, it was New York Comic Con! I mentioned in my throwback post of our Monster Mash Halloween Family costumes that my youngest picks our family costumes each year–to make that fair, our oldest selects the costumes for our yearly visit to New York Comic Con. This year, he decided they should be Beavis and Butthead.
I wanted to be my lifelong favorite Mike Judge character, from a different show of his, Daria.
My oldest son and I split off from my husband and my younger son, as they had tasks to attend to like Jedi Training for Young Padawans and we were more interested in waiting for twenty-five minutes in hopes to see John Carpenter’s panel (on Friday the 13th!) only to be turned away once the room had met capacity.
The Beavis costume was a real hit, especially since he was walking around with his shirt over his head, impersonating Beavis’ alter ego, Cornholio. People stopped to take photos of him, including a guy who stopped him and said, “I sent your photo to all my friends, they all loved it!” As he walked away, T looked at me and said, “I don’t remember ever seeing that guy before…” ha!
But I think the person that may have been the most excited to ask him if he needed TP for his bunghole was Rick Parker, The Beavis and Butthead Comic Book artist himself (and fellow wordpress blogger).
I gotta be honest, I don’t catch a lot of references at Comic Con. I don’t really watch video games, I’m not into Star Wars or…a lot of the fandoms. I’m a different flavor of nerd.
I love Comic-Con, not because I love comics or want to be privy to the latest news in pop culture, but because I love being surrounded by passionate, excited, and creative people. I often quietly guess the costumes incorrectly to my teenager, who informs me that I “should feel so embarrassed right now.” I don’t.
I was surprised how few people caught my 90’s MTV reference, but he reminded me that I was dressed like every other “y2k” fashionista…and that I’m old. Whatev.
I was really excited to see this little girl in this rendition of Lydia, as I hadn’t seen a costume for the wedding version before and it was so cute on this little one! But I was surprised to see that this was one of the most popular costumes that day, along with Barbie ones. I guess the musical really revived the ‘juice franchise.
This Freddy Kruger was SO enthusiastic. He got really into character, and even filmed a clip with Cornholio.
I’m not sure what characters are nostalgia or not, because there are so many revivals. Also, if a character has been around the whole time, could it be considered nostalgic? I don’t think so, so here’s the rest:
I was planning on sharing a bit about the panel we sat for and the booths, but it’s time for me to head on out to the gym for the morning, so maybe another time.
