In 2023, inspired by Fran Drescher’s character on 90’s sitcom The Nanny and bored with an athleisure aesthetic, I resolved to have more fun getting dressed. I did it! This is the most consistent I’ve ever been with a resolution. I’d try and remember to snap a pic every day that I made a new look at home. I ended up with pictures of outfits for more than half of the days of the year!
Almost all of my clothes are thrifted, and I’m proud of it. I love making sustainable choices and the creativity that thrifted clothes lend. Who cares what gender this shirt was intended for? Who cares that these pants might’ve been for a dance recital? Who cares that I’m not wearing it the way the designer intended? It’s already been determined someone else’s trash, so it’s up to me to decide how to make it treasured.
I made a shotty little slideshow through my iPhone of the outfits I created throughout the year. Check it out if you wanna–I’m not much of a video gal myself.
This year I’m continuing to have fun getting dressed. I intend to post more regularly about my outfits–or ‘fits, as my teen son calls ’em. I sometimes google how to style a certain piece, so I know just how helpful that can be!
Here’s this week’s line up:
SO MUCH THRIFT HERE–Goodwill down to the Vuori sports bra that matches the mauve gaucho pant. I don’t love the crocs with the look, but I was dying to wear these pants again. All thrifted, except for the crocs and the fuzzy socks (a gift!)
These Urban Outfitter wide leg corduroy pants were under $13 at Goodwill! The cardigan I bought new for my now-husband 12 years ago, I flipped it upside down for this look. Belt is also over a decade old, Shoes are vintage DKNY from Poshmark. Top from goodwill but it’s originally Abercrombie & Fitch
All goodwill, except the tights and that random piece of brown leather I tied in a bow.
This was a FUMBLE! I was struggling this morning and had on a different look as I was putting my son on the bus. The green tights and shoes were reading the same as the gray top in normal lighting and it’s was giving me black and white film vibes. All thrifted from Goodwill except for the tights.
Funny thing is, I bought these vintage pointed DKNY oxford shoes on Poshmark a whole year ago and I’m wearing them the first and second time this week. Maybe I was reluctant because when I made said purchase, my son asked me if I was trying to walk outta the house looking like the Keebler elf. He’s since come around. I digress.
The maroon dress is an Athleta Presido dress, they used to come out with new colors of it ever summer but maybe not anymore? I bought three, including this one, in 2021. The top is thrifted but originally Urban Outfitters.
Yes, I’m wearing house shoes! I did not leave the house. We followed our NYE tradition of my husband begrudgingly preparing fondue for our family of four, but we added a few more folks to the mix: my neighbor came over in her pajamas with her two kids and my teen invited five of his friends to celebrate with us, too.
Oh! The dress is technically thrifted, I got it for free from my local gift economy (freecycle type) group.
And it’s still Friday for a few more minutes! How about that!
