This was painted en plein air, beneath the gothic carpenter-style porch of a new friend’s house in Vermont. When I looked upon this scene, all I saw was an invitation: the swing and their abundant organic home vegetable garden were calling my name and shadows from the setting sun behind a willow tree out of the composition were like the fingers of a hand pulling me in.
